Saint Monastery Polovragi is located in a picturesque setting at the feet of the mountain “Piatra Polovragilor”, in a vicinity of the Oltetului Quay and in the area of Polovragi village, which actually, gave the name to the monastery.

You can reach this old location of Romanian orthodox spiritually if you cover the national highway between the cities Targu Jiu and Ramnicu Valcea.

The age of the monastery was established, after historical research, in 1505; this monastery was founded by Radu and Patru, the sons of Danciu Zamona.

The Second founder of monastery Polovragi is Danciu Paraianu, who buid the church of today on the old foundation. So, the first documentary attestation confirms the monacal establishment, the village with the same name, given by the founder. As the founder dedicated it to the Saint Tomb, the monastery passed through a period of the degradation till the time of voivode Costantin Brancoveanu who redeemed it and restored it in 1703; thus this voivode became the third founder. So, at Polovragi there is one of the most beautiful and well preserved paintings from the time of Brancoveanu.

Acces in the monastery is allowed through a monumental gate, carved in Oak in the 80’s of last century; the alley with firtrees leads you quietly to the meeting with God and the people’s history.

The monastery complex at Polovragi is in the shape of a fortrees at the centre of which is the church “Assumption of the Virgin”.

This church is built in a Byzantine style with a three casped form in a proportional symmetry.

Acces inside the fortress is made through a massive gate above which there is a steeple, built during the reign of Constantin Brancoveanu.

From its beginnings till 1968 in the monastery of Polovragi there lived monks. Starting with this year here lived a community of nuns, organized on the principle “Work and Pray”. As they managed within a short while but with a lot of effort to restore the whole monastery complex the nuns at Polovragi are known for the piety, hard.
